History

The Eesti Jalgpalli Liit (EJL) was founded on 14 December 1921 and became members of FIFA in 1923 taking part in the qualifying campaigns for the 1934 and 1938 World Cups.

Following the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940 the national football team was disbanded and despite playing two unofficial matches during the German occupation (1941-1944) Estonian players and clubs were subsumed into the USSR at the end of the Second World War

Estonia declared its independence from the USSR in August 1991 and the EJL played their first official match for 52 years when they faced Slovenia in Tallinn in June 1992.
