Latvia qualified for a major tournament for the first time at Euro 2004 where they finished bottom of a group which included Czechia, Netherlands and Germany.

History

The Latvijas Futbola federācija (LFF) was founded on 19 June 1921 and became members of FIFA in 1922 taking part in the qualifying campaign for the 1938 World Cups.

Following the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940 the national football team was disbanded and Latvian players and clubs were subsumed into the USSR at the end of the Second World War

Latvia declared its independence from the USSR in August 1991 and the LFF played their first official match for 52 years when they faced Romania in Bucharest in April 1992.


Wales record v Latvia

The first meeting between Wales and Latvia came in a friendly match in 2004 as Latvia prepared for the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament.
