Following the collapse of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, consisting of Serbia and Montenegro were considered by FIFA and UEFA to be the successor to the Yugoslav national football team.

Serbia & Montenegro qualified for UEFA Euro 2004 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup before Montenegro became an independent country and formed the Fudbalska reprezentacija Crne Gore (FSCG) with Serbia forming the Fudbalski Savez Srbije (FSS).

History

Following the collapse of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, consisting of Serbia and Montenegro however its football team was banned from all international competition as a result of U.N. sanctions stemming from the conflict in Yugoslavia.

The national team of Serbia & Montenegro played its first game against Brazil on 23 December, 1994; a 2-0 defeat to Brazil in Porto Alegre.

The state of Serbia & Montenegro was created in 2003 and the newly named Fudbalski savez Srbije i Crna Gora appeared for the first time during the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign in which they were placed in the same group as Wales.

In June 2006, the Fudbalski Savez Srbije (FSS) was formed after Montenegro became an independent country and the formation of the Fudbalska reprezentacija Crne Gore (FSCG).
